I love this so much... i wrote about how African markets are more formal than people think...our formalization is community based rather than institutions and this is where our own advantage comes from. See companies like Moniepoint, M-kopa, M-pesa, Lapo etc have all won based off community models
definition of thought leadership. Weaving in the Igbo apprenticeship system as an example literally gave me goosebumps. Truly exciting to witness a fresh perspective on how African markets are innovating, evolving, bending and redefining age-long economic concepts and theories with homegrown frameworks, solutions and models.
I would suggest to delve deeper into the subject of community based/driven economic development (A playbook made in Africa).
As you said, the vocabulary needs to change. I think this is an idea worth spreading and needs to be documented and taught . In short, this mind -bending thesis is a great first salvo that begs further definition,, branding and “packaging”….
I really enjoyed reading this piece! My favorite part was the idea of shifting from 'How can we formalize this informal economy?' to a more open-minded approach. Instead of trying to formalize or 'westernize' this segment, you highlighted the importance of recognizing its unique strengths and dynamics.
Different segments have different needs and approaches, and just because Segment B operates differently than Segment A doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong with it.
The use of language from playbooks can and has been harmful to our clime, designing systems - language, conversations and business favorable to our local context is the pathway to growth and progress.
This is something you might want to pursue, maybe a conference, business course or even university tour to explain the importance of this and create a consciousness around it.

Thanks Osarumen! What else would you like me to write about?
My pleasure Adia,

Can’t wait to read what you come up with.
Cheers!
Illuminating piece.
And perhaps, after the needed complication, naturally lies the homegrown simplicity - rather than the enforced simplicity - that's sought after.
Yeah. It’s a simplicity that is clear to us but not others.
This is was a very insightful read. I participated enjoyed the example using M-PESA to sample how vocabulary could underplay impact.
Glad you liked it!
